Characteristics and principles of the Department of Pharmaceutics
The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established in 1960 under the basic principle, “Integrated life science protecting human lives and health though the use of drugs based on chemistry, physics, biology, etc.” Modern medical care has led to numerous advancements in areas including medical technology, advanced science and technology related to drug products, rapid changes in the social environment (for instance, aging), and transition to comprehensive medicine. Against this backdrop, the period of pharmaceutical education in universities in Japan was changed from four to six years in 2006. Following this development, all the departments in our faculty were integrated into the six-year Department of Pharmaceutics, and the faculty has held up its aim of making a “contribution to national health and welfare with the development of drug products and promotion of basic and clinical advanced research for the safe use of drugs” as a new principle of educational research. This goal entails training our students to be pharmacists and pharmaceutical educators and researchers who have advanced pharmaceutical knowledge, skills, and attitudes and a sense of mission and ethics as medical professionals, and this new system has further clarified our faculty’s mission and goal. As part of the six-year, integrated-faculty system, the students acquire 10 skillsets, which are required to graduate from the university.

More than 10,000 students have graduated from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences so far, most of whom are currently contributing to the maintenance and improvement of national health as capable pharmacists in institutions such as hospitals, health insurance pharmacies, and administrative agencies, as well as to the on-site instruction and cultivation of human resources as heads of pharmacy departments and pharmacies. Our graduates have also made remarkable research achievements as leading researchers in universities, pharmaceutical companies, and public research organizations, and have contributed to the advancement of medical technology and the development of advanced science and technology related to drug products.
Fulfilling facilities
Our university has faculties including the Faculty of Medicine (School of Medicine, School of Nursing), Fukuoka University Hospital, and Faculty of Sports and Health Science (Department of Sports Science, Department of Health and Exercise Science) in the same campus where the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is located. This offers excellent conditions in which the students can learn and experience integrated (team-based) medical education. In addition, our university provides various humanities courses, including in the Faculty of Humanities (Department of Education and Clinical Psychology), and is an excellent place for all-round and liberal arts education. Our faculty will strive to achieve its goals and principles by taking full advantage of the merits of our university.
Within the large Fukuoka University campus, students of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences mainly take courses in Buildings 16 and 17. Building 16 was built in 2005, the 45th anniversary of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the year in which the six-year pharmaceutical education system was established. Building 17, as a new construction for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, was built in August 2009, the memorable 75th anniversary of Fukuoka University’s opening, to promote long-term, practical, on-site training; advanced education research in the drug-product area; the establishment of a clinical pharmacy; and the cultivation of pharmacists with advanced skills as specialists following their six-year education.
16 and 17 building As an educational facility related to practical training for preliminary education, Building 17 has a dispensing training room, a dosing-instruction training room, a pharmacy training room, a fluid-dispensing training room, a drug-preparation room, a Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) training room, a Drug Information (DI) training room, a practical training support room, and a computer room equipped with 150 of the latest computers. High national-examination pass rate for pharmacists
Our fulfilling curriculum stimulates students’ desire to learn, and significant effects from “attempts, through establishing the educational system, to cultivate capable pharmacists” have been obtained by improving and maintaining the on-campus network and computer system, resulting in a great improvement in the national-examination pass rate for pharmacists. Our faculty is proud of its high pass rate in the national examination, and the low rate of students who are held back. This indicates that most students go on to the next grade and the pass rate in the national examination for pharmacists is high.
